Madison Integrals Focus on Integral Ecology and Engagement this Spring

Hi Madison Integrals:

After a dormant few months, the Integrals group is gearing up for an exciting spring! We now have two meetings planned, the previously announced gathering on March 23rd, coupled with a second session on April 27th. Each meeting is scheduled to run 2:30 – 4:30 PM at Memorial Union (check TITU for exact room).

The focus on March 23rd will be “A Brighter Shade of Green,” facilitated by Doug Reinemann. Here’s a statement for Doug to help us frame the discussion:

“I'm interested in the practice of Integral Engagement. I would like to use the tools that I have learned at Integral Leadership in Action seminars and Andrew Cohen's EnlightenNext Retreat to attempt a process of integral engagement on environmental issues using the "Bright Green" article as a focal piece. My perspective is also informed by my professional interest in energy and environmental issues and my study of Christian, Native American and other esoteric traditions, thought and philosophy. If this process is successful, it will easily consume the entire two hours. (If not, we can go home early.)

I've been thinking of developing a graduate seminar series on this topic and this would give me an opportunity to try this.” - Doug Reinemann

Links to the “Bright Green” article have been previously sent out, but here it is for your convenience:

This discussion will flow well into the April 27th meeting, at which Marian Farriar will help us focus on Integral Ecology through a couple of case studies she will bring to us.

We originally had hoped to accomplish BOTH discussions this month, but it became clear that there is too much here for one meeting!

And just a reminder that we decided to add an extra session - on April 6th, 2009 from 2:30-4:30pm in the Wisconsin Union. Alberto said he will get a room for us and Doug will continue his presentation and facilitate the discussion of the 'Bright Green' article.

For those of you who are newer to Integral Theory you may want to look up the 'pre-trans fallacy' in any of the Wilber books you happen to have on hand. It discusses what was, for me, one of the most confusing things I came across in my own development which is that the same language is used by folks who are pre-rational (and believe in magic and Santa Claus) and folks who are post-rational (legitimate psychics or medicine men.) In the example that came up in our group - 'beige' union-with-nature, which is a lack of differentiation from nature (like the infant's inability to distinguish between self and other,) and transcendent 'non-dual' understandings both use similar language - "union". The difference being that someone who has achieved a high STAGE has access to all the stages before (or below) it in the developmental spectrum. The person who is at the beige STAGE of development does not have access to any of the stages that follow it until s/he 'grows up' into them.

Another example: Magic and Psychic are not the same thing. Magic is a pre-rational stage and Psychic is a post-rational stage and this can be very confusing in real life when they are both talking about 'auras' and 'energy phenomena.' Thinking magic and psychic are the same thing is the 'pre-trans fallacy.' EITHER throwing them both out because 99% of the stuff 'out there' is magic OR accepting everything 'out there' as authentic 'psychic' phenomena is typical in the culture I grew up in. It tends to leave one a little confused when both kinds of experiences are part of life.

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 6th - Mary Kay Reinemann
